PORAC, PAMPANGA – The second committee hearing on the alleged illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operation (POGO) in the Municipality of Porac was conducted on June 21, 2024, at the SP Session Hall. This crucial meeting was convened to address ongoing concerns and investigate the operations of unauthorized POGOs that have reportedly been operating within the municipality. The hearing brought together local government officials, law enforcement agencies, and representatives from the gaming industry to present evidence and discuss the implications of these illegal activities.
During the hearing, municipal officials expressed grave concerns about the negative impacts of illegal POGOs on the community. Mayor Jaime Capil emphasized the need for stringent enforcement of laws to protect the integrity and safety of the municipality. “We must ensure that our community is not compromised by illegal activities that undermine our regulations and pose risks to our citizens,” Mayor Capil stated. He called for a comprehensive crackdown on unauthorized gaming operations, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the local economy and public order.
Representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) presented their findings and the challenges faced in combating illegal POGO operations. They reported on several raids conducted in recent months, which led to the arrest of numerous individuals involved in unauthorized gaming activities. However, they acknowledged the sophisticated nature of these operations, which often involve intricate networks and offshore elements, making enforcement difficult.
The committee also heard testimonies from local residents and business owners who have been affected by the presence of illegal POGOs. Many voiced their concerns about the increased criminal activities, such as human trafficking and money laundering, associated with these operations. Business owners complained about unfair competition and the detrimental effects on the local economy, stressing the need for immediate action to restore order and fairness in the community.
In response to these concerns, the committee discussed potential legislative measures and policy reforms aimed at strengthening the regulatory framework for gaming operations. Suggestions included stricter licensing requirements, enhanced monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and increased penalties for violations. The committee members emphasized the importance of collaboration between local and national authorities to effectively address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
The hearing concluded with a commitment from all stakeholders to continue working together to combat illegal POGO operations in Porac. The committee plans to hold further hearings and consultations to ensure comprehensive solutions are implemented. As the investigation progresses, the municipality remains vigilant in its efforts to uphold the law and protect its residents from the adverse effects of unauthorized gaming activities.
