On December 8, 2024, Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. led a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda Founder’s House as part of the city’s 195th Founding Anniversary celebrations. The event honored the significant historical and cultural heritage of Angeles City, paying tribute to its founder, Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda. Mayor Lazatin was joined by Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting, as well as city tourism officer Anneleen Sugui, and notable figures including the heir of Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda, Salie Naguiat, and historian Carmen McTavish.
The wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Founder’s House, a structure rich in history that dates back to 1824. This house, built by Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda and his wife, Rosalia de Jesus, is the oldest surviving residence in the city and continues to be maintained by the descendants of the founder. The structure, a two-story building with an attic, is notable for its high stone wall and decorative gate, reflecting the grandeur of its era. Originally constructed with a nipa roof, it was later updated to galvanized iron sheets to enhance its fire safety.
This historic house holds many stories beyond its architectural significance. During the Philippine-American War, it served as a base for the men of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, while the General himself resided in the nearby Pamintuan House. Additionally, this residence was the birthplace of Servillano Aquino, a prominent Filipino general during the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the great-grandfather of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino Jr.
In February 2023, the Angeles City Government, in collaboration with the National Museum, unveiled a historical marker at the Residencia de Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda. This recognition added to the house’s distinguished status, which was first marked by the National Historical Institute in 1986. In 2015, it was declared an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum, highlighting its value as a cultural and historical landmark.
The wreath-laying ceremony was not just an observance of the city’s founding but a celebration of its enduring legacy and deep-rooted cultural identity. Mayor Lazatin emphasized the importance of remembering the city’s history and honoring those who laid the foundations for the modern city of Angeles. The event was a reminder of the city’s vibrant past and the efforts of past generations to build a community that continues to thrive.
The participation of Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting and key figures from the community underscored the collective effort in preserving Angeles City’s heritage. This annual commemoration serves as an opportunity for residents to reflect on their shared history and take pride in the cultural gems that the city holds.
As Angeles City looks forward to the future, its rich past serves as a guiding light. Events like the wreath-laying at the Founder’s House reinforce the community’s commitment to preserving its heritage and fostering a strong sense of identity among its citizens. The story of Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda and his enduring legacy continues to inspire the people of Angeles City to honor their roots and look forward with pride.
