The Christmas season is in full swing in Angeles City as Angeleños flocked to the Holy Rosary Parish Church (HRPC) for the first night of Simbang Gabi on Sunday, December 15. The Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Nolasco L. Fernandez, who led the faithful in this long-standing tradition, marking the beginning of the nine-day novena leading up to Christmas Eve.
The first night of Simbang Gabi coincided with the third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday, which is often referred to as the “Sunday of Joy.” This day symbolizes hope, joy, and the anticipation of Christ’s birth, a perfect theme as the community gathered to celebrate the coming holiday season.
Following the evening Mass, many parishioners and visitors made their way to Plaza Angel, located just outside the church, where they indulged in traditional Filipino Christmas treats. Local vendors offered popular delicacies such as puto bumbong (purple rice cake) and bibingka (rice cake with salted eggs), which are a staple of the festive season in the Philippines.
The Simbang Gabi tradition continues every night at 7:30 p.m. until December 23, offering a chance for Angeleños to gather in prayer and anticipation of Christmas. In addition, morning masses are being held daily at 4:30 a.m. from December 16 to 24, allowing residents to participate in the festive religious observance at their convenience.
This cherished tradition of Simbang Gabi not only holds religious significance but also strengthens the sense of community, bringing together families and friends to prepare spiritually for Christmas. It is a time for reflection, joy, and unity as the city embraces the holiday spirit.
The attendance at HRPC was notably high on the first night, as Angeleños took part in this beloved custom, marking the start of their Christmas celebrations. The combination of faith, food, and community spirit truly captured the essence of the season.
As Simbang Gabi continues through the week, HRPC remains a focal point for the city’s Christmas observances, with both the nightly and early morning masses providing opportunities for the community to connect, celebrate, and share in the joy of the season.
