On January 7, 2025, the Angeles City Government, led by Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., continued its successful Walang Plastikan – Plastik Palit Bigas Project in Barangay Sto. Rosario. This initiative aims to encourage residents to segregate their waste at home while helping to reduce, if not entirely eliminate, the use of plastics throughout the city.
The Walang Plastikan – Plastik Palit Bigas Project allows Angeleño households to exchange recyclable plastic waste for rice. According to the program, one kilogram of recyclable plastics is equivalent to one kilogram of rice. This provides a direct incentive for residents to participate in waste segregation while simultaneously addressing food security concerns within the community.
Mayor Lazatin’s Chief Adviser, IC Calaguas, shared that the city government will be collecting recyclable plastics from participating households in exchange for rice. This initiative not only promotes environmental responsibility but also provides tangible support to families in need, making the program a win-win for both the environment and the people.
The plastics collected through this exchange will be processed and transformed into brick pavers. These pavers will then be used in various city infrastructure projects, offering a sustainable way to repurpose waste materials and contribute to public works.
Environmental Management System Head Kiko Pangilinan was on-site to supervise the plastic-to-rice exchange in Barangay Sto. Rosario. Pangilinan noted the importance of community involvement in the success of the program, as proper waste segregation at the household level plays a crucial role in reducing the city’s plastic waste.
The Walang Plastikan initiative is part of a broader environmental agenda championed by Mayor Lazatin. The program encourages responsible waste management practices and aims to make Angeles City cleaner, greener, and more sustainable for future generations.
As the program expands across more barangays, it reflects the city’s commitment to both improving environmental standards and addressing the basic needs of its residents. Through creative programs like the Walang Plastikan – Plastik Palit Bigas Project, the Angeles City Government continues to make strides in promoting a more sustainable and community-oriented approach to urban living.
