ANGELES CITY – The local government, through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), kicked off 2025 with an intensified awareness campaign on solid waste segregation. This campaign, which will run from January to June, aims to educate and engage residents on proper waste management practices, focusing on the importance of segregating waste at the barangay level.
The campaign will include Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) sessions and public hearings across all 33 barangays in Angeles City. Target participants include barangay council officers, community leaders, homeowners association representatives, and business owners. These sessions aim to ensure that key community figures are well-informed about the city’s solid waste management policies and can help disseminate information to the broader public.
On January 22, 2025, the third public hearing was held at Barangay Mining, where the city’s Black and White Solid Waste Segregation policy was discussed. The policy promotes the use of color-coded bags—Black for wet waste and White for dry waste—to make waste segregation easier and more systematic. This initiative is a key part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve waste management and reduce environmental impact.
Previously, CENRO teams had distributed flyers with detailed guidelines on waste segregation and the collection schedules for different waste types. These materials are part of the broader effort to inform residents about their responsibilities under the city’s solid waste management plan, which is aligned with the provisions of R.A. 9003 and is monitored by the National Solid Waste Management Commission.
The campaign is also consistent with the goals of Chapter 3 of the Angeles City Environmental Code, or City Ordinance No. 431. CENRO Head Jenifer Castro emphasized that engaging key sectors within the community is crucial for raising awareness and ensuring compliance with the city’s waste management policies.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. has been a strong advocate for environmental responsibility and waste management efficiency. He believes that this campaign will contribute to building a legacy of environmental consciousness among Angelenos. By fostering a culture of sustainability, the mayor aims to enhance the city’s overall waste management system and ensure a cleaner, greener community.
As the campaign progresses throughout the first half of the year, CENRO will continue to work closely with local leaders and residents to ensure the successful implementation of solid waste segregation practices, which will play a crucial role in improving the city’s environmental health.
