Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr.’s initiative to establish the first fully solar-powered public school in Angeles City is one step closer to becoming a reality. On January 30, 2025, Chief Adviser IC Calaguas and Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel visited Belen Homesite Elementary School to inspect the ongoing preparations for its full transition to solar power. This project is a major milestone in the city’s efforts to modernize public education infrastructure and promote sustainability.
During the visit, Calaguas and Manuel were joined by Angeles City Economic Development and Investment Promotions Officer Irish Bonus-Llego, Gender and Development Officer Mina Cabiles, and General Services Officer Evangeline Malonzo. The group observed the progress of the installation of solar panels, which will be used to power essential facilities in the school, including air conditioners and smart TVs in eight classrooms.
The solar panels are being funded by the city government and are part of Mayor Lazatin’s broader plan to enhance the quality of education while also reducing the carbon footprint of public schools. This project will make Belen Homesite Elementary School the first in Angeles City to be powered entirely by solar energy, setting a new standard for eco-friendly school facilities.
The solar-powered setup will provide a more comfortable learning environment for students, as the air conditioning will help regulate the temperature in classrooms, making them more conducive to learning, especially during hot weather. Additionally, the integration of smart TVs will enhance the educational experience by allowing for more interactive lessons and access to digital resources.
Mayor Lazatin’s vision for this project is not only to make the school more energy-efficient but also to serve as a model for other schools in the city and region. The use of solar power aligns with the city’s sustainability goals and demonstrates a commitment to environmental responsibility.
The transition of Belen Homesite Elementary School to a fully solar-powered institution is a pioneering move in Angeles City’s educational sector. Once completed, the school will be a prime example of how modern technology can be leveraged to improve both the learning experience and the environment.
This initiative is just one of many steps the Lazatin administration is taking to innovate the city’s public services, with a focus on sustainability, modernization, and the well-being of its citizens. As the installation nears completion, the city looks forward to setting a precedent for future projects in education and renewable energy.
