On April 3, 2025, former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. paid a courtesy visit to the Angeles City Hall, where he was warmly welcomed by Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. and the 33 barangay captains of the city, led by ABC President Danilo Nacu. The meeting was an opportunity for Abalos to engage with local leaders and discuss various issues that impact the community.
During the visit, Abalos emphasized his advocacy for the removal of value-added tax (VAT) on electricity, a measure he believes will provide financial relief to many Filipino families struggling with the high costs of utilities. He also expressed his intention to introduce a comprehensive support program for farmers, focusing on facilitating easier access to loans, reducing land taxes, expanding crop insurance, and providing educational assistance for farmers’ children.
Mayor Lazatin welcomed Abalos’ proposed initiatives, recognizing the positive impact they could have on the city’s residents, particularly those in the farming sector. Lazatin also handed over a One Town, One Product (OTOP) souvenir to Abalos, which the former DILG Secretary admired and appreciated, highlighting the city’s commitment to promoting local products.
Also present during the visit were Secretary to the Mayor Raffy Lazatin, City Administrator Atty. Willie Rivera, and ACEDIPO Head Irish Bonus-Llego, who all joined the warm reception and expressed support for the initiatives discussed by Abalos.
Abalos’ visit was a significant opportunity for Angeles City leaders to engage with a former cabinet member, who continues to champion key issues such as economic relief for the people and support for the agricultural sector. His proposals, if enacted, could have a lasting effect on both urban and rural communities across the country.
The visit underscores the importance of strong collaboration between local and national government leaders in addressing pressing concerns and improving the welfare of the people. Mayor Lazatin and the barangay captains expressed their readiness to work together with Abalos in advancing these efforts.
As Abalos’ visit concluded, both the former DILG Secretary and local leaders reaffirmed their commitment to serving the people of Angeles City, especially in fostering sustainable development and providing long-term solutions to the challenges faced by local communities.
