On April 23, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) resumed its intensified “Operation Baklas” to remove unlawful election campaign materials that violate provisions under COMELEC Resolution No. 11086. The operation aims to enforce campaign regulations and ensure a fair and orderly election process.
Resolution No. 11086, particularly Section 8, clearly prohibits the posting, displaying, or exhibiting of any campaign propaganda outside designated common poster areas. It also deems campaign materials illegal when placed in public spaces or on private properties without the owner’s consent.
COMELEC officers, in coordination with local government units and other enforcement agencies, conducted simultaneous operations across various barangays, targeting oversized, out-of-place, and improperly installed campaign materials. The operation seeks to level the playing field for all candidates by preventing undue advantage through illegal publicity.
“Candidates must strictly follow the rules. We are reminding everyone that the campaign period does not give them free rein to post materials wherever they please,” a COMELEC official emphasized during the operation. The agency has reiterated its commitment to uphold election laws and take action against violators.
Authorities removed posters from electric posts, trees, waiting sheds, and even private properties where no prior permission had been secured. They also reminded supporters and volunteers that even well-intentioned campaigning must still comply with legal guidelines.
The continuation of Operation Baklas comes as candidates ramp up their outreach efforts. With the elections drawing near, COMELEC warned that non-compliant parties may face sanctions, including disqualification complaints and administrative cases.
COMELEC also urged the public to participate in safeguarding the integrity of the elections by reporting violations. As the campaign season unfolds, the poll body remains firm in its call for all candidates to adhere to lawful and ethical campaigning.
