The Angeles City Government, through the City Veterinary Office, launched a free neutering and spaying program for dogs on November 5, 2024, at the Angeles City Dog Pound and Animal Shelter. This initiative aims to address the increasing stray animal population and promote responsible pet ownership in the city. Local pet owners are encouraged to take part in this program to help curb the growing number of unwanted animals.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. announced that pet owners can inquire at the Angeles City Dog Pound, located within the City Hall Compound, to schedule a free neuter or spay for their pets. The program has been organized as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve animal welfare and reduce the number of stray animals in the streets. It offers an accessible solution for pet owners looking to manage their pets’ reproduction responsibly.
In a statement, Mayor Lazatin’s Chief Adviser, IC Calaguas, emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader effort to educate Angeleños on responsible pet ownership. Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel also highlighted that such programs help alleviate the financial burden on pet owners who may struggle to afford spaying and neutering procedures at private clinics.
Dr. Christian Xyric Arcilla, the City Veterinary Officer, explained that spaying and castration are both highly effective methods of sterilization, which significantly contribute to controlling the animal population. By reducing the number of unplanned litters, the program also helps lower the incidence of animal neglect and abandonment.
The spaying and neutering initiative is also seen as a crucial measure in reducing the spread of rabies in the city. With fewer stray animals roaming the streets, there is a lower risk of rabies transmission between animals and humans, making it an important public health measure as well.
Residents have responded positively to the free service, with many expressing appreciation for the city’s efforts in animal welfare. This initiative is also viewed as an essential step in keeping the community safe from the dangers posed by an uncontrolled animal population. The program has been well-received by local pet owners who see it as an opportunity to ensure their pets’ health and well-being.
The Angeles City Government plans to continue this program to ensure the responsible management of the city’s pet population. Through collaboration with the City Veterinary Office, local government officials aim to create a healthier and more sustainable environment for both pets and residents alike. The program is expected to expand and provide even more support for pet owners in the future.
