On November 9, the Angeles City Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Canine Group of the Angeles City Police Office (ACPO) carried out sweeping operations at the AUF Sports and Cultural Center to ensure safety ahead of the Pre-Pageant event of Mutya Ning Angeles. The operations were aimed at preventing any security threats, ensuring a safe environment for participants and spectators of the pageant.
IC Calaguas, Chief Adviser and Political Tactician to Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, took the opportunity to personally inspect the narcotic detection and bomb-sniffing dogs used by the ACPO. Calaguas, a strong supporter of animal welfare, checked the condition of the dogs and affirmed their readiness for duty during the event. These highly trained dogs are crucial to the safety protocols of the city, ensuring that public events remain secure from potential threats.
In addition to his inspection duties, Calaguas, along with Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, contributed by donating monthly supplies for the K9 unit. These donations included vital medicines, grooming supplies, and feeds for the six narcotic detection and bomb-sniffing dogs. Such gestures underscore the city’s commitment to maintaining the health and efficiency of these valuable working animals.
Calaguas, a well-known advocate for animal welfare, is particularly devoted to the well-being of the K9s. Her passion for animals extends beyond just the EOD unit, as she is also a proponent of Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs for stray animals in the city. Through her efforts, many stray animals have found safer, more humane solutions to their care.
Before her current role in Angeles City, Calaguas had a significant impact on the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). From 2017 to 2020, she served as Acting Deputy Director General for Administration and Chief of Staff under Director General Aaron N. Aquino. During this time, she was instrumental in the rehabilitation of the K9 Unit, enhancing the capacity of these teams to fight against drug-related crimes.
The collaboration between the ACPO and the local government, particularly through figures like Calaguas and Manuel, reflects a deep commitment to both public safety and the welfare of animals. Their ongoing support for the K9 unit ensures that these animals are always ready to serve in critical operations, such as bomb detection and narcotics enforcement.
The sweeping operation at the AUF Sports and Cultural Center went smoothly, with no security threats detected, thanks to the thorough work of the ACPO EOD Canine Group. The safety measures implemented have assured the public that all attendees at the Pre-Pageant event were able to enjoy the festivities without concern for their safety.
