On January 18, 2025, members of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and students from the Philippine Science High School and Angeles City Science High School participated in a tree planting event at the Angeles City Watershed in Barangay Sapangbato. This activity is part of the ongoing efforts by the city government to reforest the 560-hectare watershed area, which plays a critical role in water conservation for the region.
The reforestation initiative, which began in 2020, aims to increase water reserves for the city and surrounding areas, particularly benefiting the Metro Clark region. With the increasing demand for water resources due to urbanization, this effort seeks to ensure a sustainable water supply for the growing population and industries in the area.
In his statement, Mayor Carmelo ‘Pogi’ Lazatin Jr. emphasized the importance of these efforts for the future of the city and its residents. He noted that ensuring access to sufficient water is crucial not only for daily consumption but also for sustaining agricultural and industrial activities. “We are committed to securing the welfare of our citizens while protecting our environment,” Mayor Lazatin said, highlighting the long-term benefits of these conservation actions.
The city’s government is encouraging private organizations and non-governmental groups to adopt specific areas within the watershed for further development and maintenance. By engaging various sectors, the city hopes to maximize the success of its reforestation program and ensure its sustainability.
In addition to the tree planting, the project also involves regular monitoring and care of newly planted trees to ensure their survival and growth. The city has been working with local environmental groups and government agencies to implement strategies that will ensure the protection and expansion of the watershed.
Residents have also been encouraged to participate in the initiative, with the mayor calling on the community to play an active role in environmental protection. “We all have a part to play in safeguarding our natural resources. Through these efforts, we aim to leave a lasting impact on future generations,” Mayor Lazatin remarked.
The Angeles City Watershed serves as a critical ecological area for the region, and the city’s reforestation program aims to restore its ecological balance. With continued efforts like these, the city government is hopeful that they can create a more resilient environment that can withstand the challenges of climate change and urban growth.
