On February 18, 2025, the Angeles City Government, led by Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., continued its Walang Plastikan – Plastik Palit Bigas initiative in Barangay Cutcut. The program aims to encourage Angeleño households to adopt waste segregation practices at home and reduce, if not eliminate, the use of plastic. This project has become an essential part of the city’s environmental efforts, as it promotes both responsible waste management and support for local families in need.
The Walang Plastikan program encourages residents to separate their recyclable plastics from other waste materials. In return, the city government offers a kilo of rice for every kilo of recyclable plastic collected. This initiative provides an innovative solution to tackle plastic pollution while simultaneously addressing food security issues by supporting local families.
Chief Adviser IC Calaguas highlighted that the plastics gathered from households will not only be exchanged for rice but will also be processed into brick pavers. These pavers will be used for various infrastructure projects in the city, adding a functional and sustainable aspect to the program. By reusing the plastics, the city is reducing waste while creating materials that can improve urban infrastructure.
Environmental Management System Head Kiko Pangilinan oversaw the exchange event in Barangay Cutcut, ensuring that the plastic collection process was organized and efficient. His involvement reflects the city’s commitment to managing waste effectively and promoting environmental sustainability, further underlining the program’s long-term impact on the community.
The Walang Plastikan program has garnered positive responses from residents who are eager to contribute to environmental conservation while also receiving essential resources. With the continued participation of Angeleño households, the initiative is expected to further promote waste segregation and reduce plastic consumption throughout the city.
By collecting recyclable plastics and exchanging them for rice, the program offers an incentive that benefits both the environment and the people of Angeles City. This unique exchange creates a win-win situation, where households are motivated to manage their waste better while receiving necessary support for their families.
In conclusion, the Walang Plastikan – Plastik Palit Bigas initiative in Barangay Cutcut represents a significant step towards achieving both environmental and social goals. Through this project, the city government of Angeles is addressing the issue of plastic pollution, promoting waste segregation, and providing much-needed resources for families, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
