On March 6, 2025, the Angeles City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., initiated a free medical campaign offering pap smears, breast examinations, and HIV testing to indigent Angeleñas from Barangays Pandan, Capaya, Mining, Tabun, Sto. Cristo, Ninoy Aquino, and Salapungan at Rural Health Unit V. This initiative is part of the city’s programs in celebration of Women’s Month, aimed at promoting women’s health and well-being.
Mayor Lazatin, who personally oversaw the activity in RHU V along with Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, expressed his unwavering commitment to providing accessible healthcare to all residents, particularly women. “Patuloy ang pangako ko sa inyo na ang serbisyong medikal sa ilalim ng aking administrasyon ay literal na dadalhin ko sa inyong mga pintuan” (I continue to promise that medical services under my administration will literally be brought to your doorsteps), said Mayor Lazatin.
Members of the Gender and Development Office, led by Mina Cabiles, and the City Health Office, headed by Dr. Verona Guevarra, were also present during the activity, ensuring that the event ran smoothly and that all attendees received the necessary medical services.
The free services offered during the campaign are vital for the early detection of health conditions like cervical and breast cancer. The pap smear, in particular, is a critical test to screen for cervical cancer, while the breast exams help detect early signs of breast cancer, both of which can significantly improve outcomes when identified early.
The city government aims to serve a total of 600 women across the 33 barangays throughout the campaign, extending these essential healthcare services to women who may otherwise lack access to such screenings. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts of Mayor Lazatin’s administration to prioritize women’s health through free medical programs.
This is not the first time that the Lazatin administration has provided free pap smears and breast examinations. Since taking office, Mayor Lazatin has consistently implemented health programs specifically focused on improving the lives of women, demonstrating a long-term commitment to their care and well-being.
Through this initiative, the city continues to empower women by offering the resources needed to monitor and maintain their health. The free pap smear, breast examination, and HIV testing campaign is a key step in ensuring that every Angeleña has access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial situation.
