In an effort to encourage sustainable living and promote food security, the Angeles City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., is offering free seeds and plant seedlings to residents. The initiative provides a variety of plants, including upland kangkong, sitao, okra, pechay, mustasa, as well as seedlings of fruit-bearing trees such as lettuce, duhat, langka, mabolo, and many others. Additionally, ornamental plants such as camantigue, gumamela, cosmos, and duranta are also available for residents.
Mayor Lazatin has urged Angeleños to take advantage of the free plants and start their own home gardens. “Establishing your own garden at home not only promotes healthier living but also helps ensure food security, especially in these challenging times,” said Mayor Lazatin. The free seeds and seedlings can be availed at the Angeles City Agriculture Office at City Hall, open from Monday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This initiative builds upon the success of the “Luntian sa Barangay Lingap Project,” a sustainable project launched by Mayor Lazatin during the height of the pandemic. The project was designed to help provide food security to residents by distributing seeds of various vegetables like petsay, mustasa, okra, and ampalaya, as well as food packs. Over 150,000 households in the city benefited from the program, which aimed to encourage families to utilize vacant lots for gardening and grow their own food.
Through this initiative, the city government continues to promote the importance of self-sufficiency and sustainable practices within the community. Mayor Lazatin emphasized that gardening not only helps with food security but also brings families together and supports the local environment by encouraging the planting of trees and plants.
The free plant distribution program is available to all Angeles City residents, with an open invitation for those interested to visit the City Agriculture Office to collect their seeds and seedlings. This effort aims to create a more sustainable and greener city, with every resident contributing to the beautification and productivity of their own households.
In addition to food security, the program also highlights the city’s focus on environmental conservation, with a variety of trees and ornamental plants that will improve air quality and create a more eco-friendly environment for the community.
The city government continues to expand its efforts to empower residents with the tools needed for self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility, proving that small actions like home gardening can make a significant impact on the city’s overall sustainability.
