On March 6, 2025, the Angeles City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., commenced a free medical campaign offering pap smears, breast examinations, and HIV testing for indigent Angeleñas from Barangays Lourdes Sur East, Agapito Del Rosario, Claro M. Recto, Malabanias, Virgen Delos Remedios, and Sta. Teresita at Rural Health Unit III. This initiative is part of the city’s ongoing programs for Women’s Month, focusing on improving the health and well-being of women.
Mayor Lazatin personally oversaw the event, with the support of Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel. Members of the Gender and Development Office, led by Mina Cabiles, and the City Health Office, headed by Dr. Verona Guevarra, were also present to ensure the smooth execution of the event and to assist the women attending the screenings.
The free services, including pap smears and breast exams, are vital in detecting early signs of cervical and breast cancer, both of which are preventable if diagnosed early. The pap smear, in particular, is a crucial test for detecting cervical cancer, a leading cause of death among women that can be treated when detected in its early stages.
Mayor Lazatin reaffirmed his commitment to providing healthcare services directly to the community, stating, “Patuloy ang pangako ko sa inyo na ang serbisyong medikal sa ilalim ng aking administrasyon ay literal na dadalhin ko sa inyong mga pintuan” (I continue to promise that medical services under my administration will literally be brought to your doorsteps). His leadership emphasizes the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare for all residents, particularly women.
The city government has set a target of providing services to 600 women across 33 barangays throughout the duration of the campaign. This initiative continues the Lazatin administration’s efforts to ensure women have access to the medical care they need.
This is not the first time that Mayor Lazatin’s administration has provided free medical screenings for indigent women. Since taking office, the mayor has consistently focused on women’s health, organizing various health programs aimed at enhancing the lives of Angeleñas.
Through this campaign, the Angeles City Government remains committed to empowering women and promoting their health, ensuring that they have the resources and support needed to protect their well-being.
