In an exciting move toward sustainable energy, Angeles City is set to inaugurate its first solar-powered public school, the Belen Homesite Elementary School in Barangay Sto. Cristo. This groundbreaking initiative is a result of the leadership of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., Chief Adviser IC Calaguas, and Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, who, on March 3, 2025, conducted an inspection of the school’s facilities ahead of its official inauguration on March 6.
The inspection team was joined by key city officials, including General Services Officer Evangeline Malonzo, City Engineer’s Officer-in-Charge Helen Ayro, and engineers Engr. Angelo Tayag and Engr. Giovanni Aquino, all of whom were involved in the planning and implementation of this innovative project. The project aims to provide students with an environment that is not only modern and comfortable but also environmentally friendly and energy-efficient.
Mayor Lazatin expressed his excitement about the development, highlighting that the solar-powered school will be the first of its kind in the city. The installation of solar panels, funded by the city government, will power essential amenities such as air conditioners and smart TVs in eight classrooms. This initiative will not only reduce the school’s carbon footprint but also enhance the learning experience for students by providing a more comfortable classroom environment.
“This solar-powered school is a testament to our commitment to renewable energy and sustainability,” said Mayor Lazatin. He further emphasized that the adoption of renewable energy will allow the city to make more efficient use of electricity, potentially saving the local government up to P100 million annually in energy costs. The savings could be redirected to other essential public services, further benefiting the community.
The project is not just an environmental initiative but a significant upgrade to the infrastructure of public schools in the city. Belen Homesite Elementary School will be fully air-conditioned, making it the first solar-powered and air-conditioned elementary school in Angeles City. This upgrade will provide a more conducive learning environment for students, especially during the hot summer months.
In addition to providing a comfortable learning space, the school’s shift to renewable energy aligns with the city’s broader goals of sustainability and environmental responsibility. The use of solar power will reduce the school’s reliance on the traditional power grid, helping to lower the city’s overall carbon emissions and energy consumption.
The inauguration on March 6 will mark a milestone in the city’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into public infrastructure. The solar-powered Belen Homesite Elementary School sets a new standard for future educational facilities in Angeles City and is expected to serve as a model for other schools in the region, promoting both education and environmental sustainability.
