On March 6, 2025, the Angeles City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., proudly inaugurated Belen Homesite Elementary School, the first fully solar-powered public school in Central Luzon. This pioneering project stands as a beacon for the entire Philippines, combining educational advancement with sustainability, and setting an example for other cities to follow.
The groundbreaking initiative showcases how local governments can modernize public schools by integrating renewable energy, ensuring long-term energy efficiency and sustainability. “This school is a showcase of Angeles City’s commitment to education and sustainability for the entire Philippines,” Mayor Lazatin emphasized. “It proves that local governments can prioritize public schools, ensuring that they are modern, energy-efficient, and conducive to learning. With a total of 32 kVA solar panels, Belen Homesite Elementary School stands as a model for other cities to follow, demonstrating that renewable energy can power our classrooms.”
The school, which features seven newly air-conditioned classrooms, is capable of accommodating approximately 189 students. The total rehabilitation cost of ₱3 million was entirely funded by the Angeles City Government, a clear demonstration of the city’s dedication to improving public education facilities.
In his speech, Mayor Lazatin urged teachers and parents to take an active role in maintaining the school’s facilities, emphasizing the importance of a clean, safe, and energy-efficient learning environment for students. “I am proud to say that this project is part of our continuous efforts to improve public education in Angeles City,” he said. “As I near the end of my term, my commitment remains firm—to leave a thriving and progressive city.”
Principal Mary Ann Tenidor of Belen Homesite Elementary expressed her gratitude for the innovative project, saying, “Bheseyans are privileged to be chosen by our Mayor Lazatin as the pilot school for a fully solar-powered and air-conditioned school in the region. This solar-powered school is a game-changer for our students and faculty. With modern, sustainable facilities, we can provide a better learning environment while also promoting environmental responsibility.”
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) President, Berlin Jhay Meneses, Jr., also lauded the project, noting, “We are grateful for the mayor’s commitment to public education. This project proves that with the right leadership, public schools can be just as modern and well-equipped as private institutions.”
The successful realization of this project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various city departments, including the City Engineer’s Office, the Office of the City Building Official, General Services Office, and the Local Finance Committee. Mayor Lazatin also thanked his team, including Chief Adviser IC Calaguas, Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, and the Lazatin Senior Staff, for their dedication in making this vision a reality.
This groundbreaking solar-powered school initiative is aligned with the city’s broader goals of sustainable development and progressive education, reinforcing Angeles City’s reputation as a leader in environmentally conscious governance.
