ANGELES CITY – Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. has formally requested assistance from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the much-needed Joint Drainage Declogging Operation across the city. In his letter sent on October 31, 2024, to Engr. Arnold Ocampo, Officer-in-Charge District Engineer of the Pampanga 3rd District Engineering Office, Lazatin asked for the provision of the necessary equipment to carry out the initiative.
The operation, which will focus on clearing canals and drainage systems along key areas, including Sto. Entierro Street and Barangay Balibago, is crucial in mitigating flooding risks, particularly as the rainy season approaches. Lazatin emphasized that this collaborative effort is vital for improving drainage conditions in the city’s flood-prone regions, which have been a persistent concern for residents.
In his letter, Mayor Lazatin pointed out that the Joint Drainage Declogging Operation is part of the city’s broader initiative to proactively address long-standing drainage issues. He expressed hope that the effort would lead to fewer disruptions during the upcoming rainy season, which typically exacerbates flooding in low-lying areas of the city.
The timing of the operation is particularly important as the rainy season brings heightened risks of severe flooding, especially in areas where clogged canals can exacerbate waterlogging. By clearing these waterways, the city aims to ensure better drainage and lessen the impact of heavy rains.
Helen Ayro, Officer-in-Charge of the City Engineer’s Office, has been designated to oversee the coordination between the City Government and the DPWH. She will work closely with DPWH personnel to ensure the smooth execution of the project, and she will monitor progress to guarantee that the cleanup is completed efficiently and within the designated timeline.
The city’s drainage system has long been a concern for residents, especially during intense rains, when clogged canals prevent the proper flow of water. The joint effort between the city government and the DPWH represents a step toward resolving these longstanding issues and ensuring a more sustainable solution for the city’s drainage system.
As preparations for the project continue, Lazatin has assured the public that the city is committed to improving flood control measures. He emphasized that this initiative is just one part of the ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance public infrastructure in Angeles City.
