Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. demonstrated his support for local businesses by enjoying a popular street treat—dirty ice cream—after visiting public schools and rural health units across the city. The Mayor’s gesture was a way to promote the importance of supporting local vendors and small traders who are a vital part of the community’s economy.
During his visit, Mayor Lazatin took the opportunity to encourage Angeleños to “support local” by purchasing products from small businesses, local producers, and local manufacturers. He stressed that such support is crucial to the growth and sustainability of the city’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which in turn helps strengthen the local economy.
The Mayor’s actions are part of his ongoing efforts to advocate for local businesses, especially in light of the challenges many have faced in recent years. By personally engaging with local vendors, Mayor Lazatin aims to inspire residents to consider buying locally made products, from street food to handcrafted goods, and thereby help keep money circulating within the community.
In line with his advocacy, the city government has also made strides to promote local businesses through initiatives like the OTOP Shop (One Town, One Product). The OTOP Shop, which serves as Angeles City’s Souvenir Center, offers a platform for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), as well as local manufacturers and producers, to showcase and sell their products free of charge.
The opening of the OTOP Shop is a strategic move by the city government to provide local entrepreneurs with more opportunities to reach a wider market, boost sales, and gain more recognition for their products. It is one of the key initiatives of Mayor Lazatin’s administration aimed at promoting local commerce and ensuring that small businesses thrive.
“Supporting local businesses is not just about helping them succeed; it’s also about fostering a stronger sense of community,” Mayor Lazatin said. His message underscores the importance of residents playing an active role in the city’s economic development through simple yet meaningful actions like buying from local vendors.
As the city continues to focus on supporting local entrepreneurs, Mayor Lazatin’s efforts to engage with Angeleños and promote local products will undoubtedly contribute to a thriving and resilient local economy. The combination of initiatives, like the OTOP Shop and his personal support for local vendors, is expected to further strengthen the city’s commitment to fostering small businesses and helping them flourish.
