In a move to protect the Sapangbato Watershed Reserve Protection Area, Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. has directed the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO), City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), and Business Permit and Licensing Division (BPLD) to install public advisory banners and signage in the area. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the region’s designation as a “no-build zone” to prevent further development and ensure environmental protection.
The installation of the signage was led by CPDO Head Engr. Nilda Quito, CENRO Head Jenifer Castro, and BPLD Chief Enrico Romero. These agencies have worked together to ensure that the advisory messages are clearly visible to residents and visitors, providing important information about the area’s protected status.
Mayor Lazatin’s move comes as part of ongoing efforts to preserve the integrity of the Sapangbato Watershed, a crucial environmental area. He has emphasized the importance of safeguarding natural resources for the community and future generations. By installing these public advisories, the city government hopes to prevent unauthorized construction and raise awareness about the area’s ecological value.
The Sapangbato Watershed, which spans 150 hectares, is located within the Angeles City limits and has been a key target for environmental conservation. The area has long been designated as a protected watershed, and efforts are being made to keep it free from encroachment and illegal construction activities that could disrupt its ecological balance.
Mayor Lazatin previously reached out to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to seek their intervention in clearing illegal structures in the watershed. In a letter addressed to DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, the mayor requested the agency’s assistance in taking enforcement actions, including issuing cease-and-desist orders and investigating violations related to unauthorized buildings within the protection area.
This action marks a significant step in the city’s commitment to environmental preservation. Mayor Lazatin’s efforts highlight the importance of collaboration between local government agencies and national environmental authorities to address illegal activities that threaten natural resources. The mayor has expressed optimism that with the support of the DENR and other stakeholders, the watershed area can be fully protected.
The city’s ongoing focus on the Sapangbato Watershed is a reflection of its proactive approach to environmental conservation. With the installation of the new public advisories, the mayor hopes that the public will become more vigilant and report any illegal construction activities, further supporting the efforts to preserve the area for future generations
