On March 6, 2025, Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. will inaugurate the Belen Homesite Elementary School in Barangay Sto. Cristo, marking the opening of the region’s first fully air-conditioned, solar-powered public school. Funded by the Angeles City Government, this project showcases the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in education.
Mayor Lazatin highlighted the significance of this project, stating that the establishment of the solar-powered school demonstrates the feasibility of clean energy. “This is a clear example that we can protect the environment by shifting away from costly fossil fuel-based electricity,” he said, emphasizing the importance of using renewable energy in local government projects.
The solar-powered Belen Homesite Elementary School is designed to produce 32 kilowatts of power with the help of 54 solar panels. These panels power seven fully air-conditioned classrooms, each equipped with 2-horsepower air conditioning units and a television. This initiative ensures that students have a comfortable and conducive learning environment while promoting eco-friendly practices.
Mayor Lazatin also shared that the renovation of the classrooms, which included new paint, tiles, and fixtures, amounted to approximately P3 million. The project was carefully planned and implemented by key city officials, including Chief Adviser and Tactician IC Calaguas, Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, City Engineer’s Office led by Helen Ayro, and the General Services Office under Evangeline Malonzo.
In addition to the solar-powered school, Mayor Lazatin’s administration has been actively working to incorporate renewable energy across the city. Solar panels are being installed in all city government offices, including Angeles City Hall, 33 barangay halls, and various health units. Furthermore, the installation of 1,500 solar lights along major and secondary roads in the city has already been completed.
The use of renewable energy will not only benefit the environment but is also expected to lead to significant cost savings. Mayor Lazatin estimates that the city will save approximately P100 million annually in electricity expenses through the use of solar power. He emphasized the need for cost-effective and efficient renewable energy solutions to maximize the city’s resources.
This groundbreaking project in Angeles City highlights the city’s leadership in adopting green energy solutions and improving public services. Mayor Lazatin’s vision of incorporating solar power into government infrastructure is set to serve as a model for other cities looking to transition to more sustainable energy sources while enhancing the quality of public services.
