On December 7, 2024, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) collaborated with the Malabanias Integrated School Boy Scouts of the Philippines for a tree-planting activity at the Angeles City Watershed in Barangay Sapangbato. This initiative is part of the city government’s ongoing mission to reforest the 560-hectare watershed area, a critical project aimed at enhancing the region’s water supply and ensuring a sustainable future for the community.
The city’s reforestation campaign began in 2020 as a strategic measure to increase water reserves, which would benefit not only Angeles City but also the broader Metro Clark area. This large-scale effort is seen as essential for safeguarding water resources, promoting ecological balance, and strengthening environmental resilience. By restoring natural vegetation, the city hopes to improve groundwater recharge and reduce the risks associated with water scarcity.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. expressed his full support for these environmental initiatives and called on the private sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to participate actively by “adopting” areas within the watershed. Lazatin’s encouragement aims to foster partnerships that will bolster the reforestation project’s long-term sustainability and expand community engagement in environmental stewardship.
The mayor emphasized the importance of preserving water resources, stating, “Having water is a must. These efforts being done at the present time will help conserve water for the use of future generations. Isa lang naman po ang goal natin, ang maseguro ang kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan, habang pinangangalagaan ang kalikasan.” His message underscores the commitment of the city government to balance the welfare of residents with environmental conservation.
The tree-planting activity not only focused on ecological benefits but also engaged community members, fostering a sense of collective responsibility for preserving the environment. Participating students from Malabanias Integrated School, alongside CENRO members, learned the importance of trees and their role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. This initiative helps instill values of sustainability and environmental awareness among the younger generation.
The city’s reforestation project aims to mitigate the effects of climate change by promoting green spaces that help combat soil erosion and support biodiversity. By increasing the number of trees, Angeles City hopes to create a more stable and healthier environment that can support various forms of life and provide essential resources for the community.
Mayor Lazatin’s push for collaboration with the private sector and NGOs highlights a community-driven approach to conservation. Through shared responsibility and joint efforts, Angeles City aims to build a stronger, greener future where both the environment and its residents can thrive. The success of these initiatives will not only secure water resources but also set a model for sustainable development in the region.
