On November 29, 2024, members from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, the City Vice Mayor’s Office, Angeles City Council, Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center, and Angeles City Human Settlement and Urban Development Office participated in a tree planting activity at the Angeles City Watershed in Barangay Sapangbato. This event was part of the city government’s ongoing efforts to reforest the 560-hectare watershed, a critical area that contributes to the city’s water supply.
The reforestation project, initiated by the city government in 2020, aims to increase the area’s water reserves, benefiting not only Angeles City but the greater Metro Clark region. The effort is a response to the growing need for sustainable water management, which is essential for the city’s development and the well-being of its residents. By enhancing the watershed, officials hope to ensure a consistent and reliable water source for future generations.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. has been a driving force behind these reforestation efforts. He has urged the private sector and non-governmental organizations to participate actively in these environmental conservation projects by “adopting” specific sections of the watershed. This collaborative approach seeks to build a strong network of stakeholders committed to safeguarding the city’s natural resources.
In his message, Mayor Lazatin emphasized the importance of preserving water sources for the future. “Having water is a must. These efforts being done at the present time will help conserve water for the use of future generations. Isa lang naman po ang goal natin, ang maseguro ang kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan, habang pinangangalagaan ang kalikasan,” he stated. His words highlighted that the city’s environmental efforts align with the larger goal of ensuring public welfare while protecting the environment.
The tree planting event was a meaningful demonstration of unity among city officials and various agencies committed to sustainable development. The activity not only addressed the immediate needs of reforestation but also reinforced the community’s responsibility to take care of natural resources for the benefit of all. Such initiatives have the potential to foster a deeper sense of environmental stewardship among residents and local groups.
The Angeles City Watershed, located in Barangay Sapangbato, serves as a vital ecological site that plays a significant role in water conservation. By focusing on the restoration of this area, the city government aims to protect biodiversity, improve water quality, and prevent soil erosion. This will help maintain the ecological balance essential for sustaining plant and animal life in the region.
With this continued commitment to reforestation and sustainable water management, Angeles City sets an example for other regions on the importance of proactive environmental care. The involvement of different sectors, including government offices, medical centers, and community organizations, reflects a collective effort to nurture the environment and secure resources for generations to come. This tree planting event was more than a symbolic gesture; it was a step toward long-term ecological sustainability and community resilience.
