On November 8, 2024, members from various city offices and agencies, including the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), the Information and Communication Technology Division, Angeles City Tourism Auxiliary, Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center, and the Command Center, gathered to conduct a tree planting activity at the Angeles City Watershed in Barangay Sapangbato. This initiative is part of the city government’s ongoing efforts to reforest the 560-hectare watershed area, aiming to boost environmental sustainability and water conservation in the region.
The reforestation program, which began in 2020, seeks to increase the city’s water reserves, ensuring long-term benefits for both Angeles City and the broader Metro Clark area. By replanting trees in the watershed, the city hopes to enhance the capacity of the area to store water, improve groundwater levels, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The project is seen as crucial to safeguarding the area’s natural resources while promoting ecological balance.
Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. has been a strong advocate for these environmental efforts, emphasizing the importance of protecting natural resources to ensure the welfare of future generations. During the tree planting event, Mayor Lazatin encouraged the private sector and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) to support the reforestation efforts by “adopting” specific areas within the watershed. This initiative invites various groups to take an active role in maintaining and rehabilitating the watershed, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
“Having water is a must,” said Mayor Lazatin, further underscoring the significance of the city’s reforestation activities. He highlighted that these efforts will help conserve water for future use, which is essential for the well-being of the community. “Isa lang naman po ang goal natin, ang maseguro ang kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan, habang pinangangalagaan ang kalikasan,” he added, expressing his dedication to balancing the needs of the people with environmental preservation.
The tree planting activity is one of many steps taken by the city government to ensure the Angeles City Watershed is properly cared for and developed. The project is designed not only to restore the natural habitat but also to address the growing need for sustainable water sources, particularly in areas facing water scarcity challenges. Reforestation is expected to improve water retention, reduce soil erosion, and foster biodiversity within the watershed.
This initiative also supports the city’s broader vision of creating a more resilient and sustainable urban environment. By integrating green spaces and restoring natural areas, the city government aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and reduce the negative effects of urbanization. The involvement of various city departments and organizations in the tree planting activity reflects a collective commitment to the city’s environmental goals.
As the reforestation efforts continue, the city government remains focused on expanding the program and encouraging community involvement. With ongoing support from the public and private sectors, the goal is to restore and protect the Angeles City Watershed, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the city and its neighboring regions for generations to come.
